Project
The documentary about my grandmother Anita, whose family welcomed a Finnish war child named Mirja in 1941. We journey alongside Anita through her recollections of the summer when Mirja became part of the family, and how they’ve maintained sporadic contact ever since. It’s a film about memory, aging, and the nostalgia of looking back on what has been.

Idea
The idea for the documentary came about when I had a conversation with my grandmother during the spring of 2021, where she recounted the summer when Mirja arrived in Öckerö. Toward the end of the spring semester, 80 years after the summer of 1941, I had the chance to capture the story through a documentary.
Process
The team has collaborated closely from start to finish, beginning with finding inspiration and planning out the story, all the way through to perfecting the sound, editing, and design elements of the final product.
We wanted to showcase Anita’s personal journey by letting her share her memories directly as she answered interview questions. At the same time, we added another layer by portraying her physical journey back to her childhood home.
Ending
The finale brings us to the warmth of Anita’s loved ones, but also to the place where she and Mirja swam and spent time together during the summer.
